In 2006 Valero challenged for his first world title, taking on Panama's Vicente Mosquera for the WBA super-featherweight belt. Everything was a fight for him - there were no exceptions. Garcia's account gives us some insight into the mentality of Valero. Garcia went on to suggest that Valero would show no restraint when sparring inexperienced fighters, saying: "He just wanted to knock everybody out." He never really took it light on anybody - he was just trying to knock you out.he was vicious, mean that guy."
No matter where he hit you, even if you were blocking it just feel the f***ing power man. One man who did spar Valero several was a young Mikey Garcia. As aggressive in sparring as he was in real fights, and reportedly flooring many of his partners, there wasn't exactly a queue of boxers willing to give him rounds. The young Venezuelan was rapidly making a name for himself on both the big stage and behind the scenes.

Valero's first fight as a professional took place on 9 July 2002 - he was 20 years old and, setting a precedent that would continue for his next 17 fights, stopped opponent Eduardo Hernandez in the first round. When talking of dream fights, Valero often gets mentioned alongside a certain Filipino star by the name of Manny Pacquiao, largely due to the glaring similarities in either man's style. He carried a powerful left hand thrown from a southpaw stance, but he was more than just a brawler - he had excellent speed, timing and footwork which allowed him to launch attacks that his opponents didn't see coming and get back out of range before taking damage in return. Valero's story, for the most part, is a familiar one. He would officially be pronounced dead at 1:30 am. On 19 April 2010, the former WBC lightweight champion was found hanging in his jail cell, having used his sports trousers as a noose. With 27 KO's from 27 fights - 19 of which came in the first round - Edwin Valero was on track to becoming one of boxing's biggest names before it all came crashing down.
